The gymnastics and sports club Leuna 1919 is a multi-discipline sports club in the small industrial town of Leuna in Saxony-Anhalt . In 1939 the club became German champions at the German gymnastics club championship.
Club history
The gymnastics and sports club Leuna 1919 was founded in September 1919 as the Rössen gymnastics club. In 1920 he took the name Turn- und Sportgemeinschaft Rössen. In 1922 the TSG soccer players founded their own club called VfB Rössen, which was later renamed SV Marathon Rössen. In 1930 the football players rejoined TSG Rössen, which from August 1933 appeared as the Leuna gymnastics and sports club. The TSV was dissolved in 1946 when the occupying powers were forbidden from associations.
In 1948 the company sports association (BSG) Chemie Leuna was founded, which continued the sports operations of the former TSV. Under the sponsorship of the economically strong Leunawerke , a high-performance sports community was built up, which was one of the GDR leaders in various sports. The wrestling section provided the GDR team champion in 1953, 1954, 1955 and 1957, the freestyle wrestlers Heinz Wagner, Fredi Kämmerer, Johann Gärtner and Werner Rosowski won individual titles in the 1950s, and Werner Rosowski was third in the all-German championship in 1954. In 1970 Chemie Leuna became GDR champion in indoor hockey for men and in 1982, 1985 and 1986 won the runner-up in men's field hockey. Uta Rohländer came from the athletics section , who won the European Junior Champion in the 400 m run in 1987 for SC Chemie Halle and later an Olympic bronze medal and the 1997 World Relay Championship.
The soccer players from BSG Chemie were less successful. They had their best years between 1956 and 1960, when they played in the third-rate 2nd GDR league . During this time, they also made people sit up and take notice in the GDR soccer cup , when they made it to the round of 16 in 1959 and only lost 4-1 to the upper division ASK Vorwärts Berlin . In 1957, 1958 and 1960, the third division team survived three cup rounds before they were prevented from reaching the round of 16 by higher-class teams. Between 1961 and 1991, the soccer players of the BSG Chemie commuted between the district league and the district class.
After the political change in 1989 and the subsequent economic changes in East Germany, the company sports community lost its economic basis, but were able to use the opportunity to found clubs again. In Leuna, TSV Leuna 1919 was revived through the stations TSG Chemie Leuna and TSG Leuna in the mid-1990s. It was able to develop into a high-performance sports club in the region with over 1100 members and 17 sports departments. The most successful so far has been the hockey department, whose men play in the Central German Oberliga, while the women's team competes in the Central German Association League (5th and 6th league, as of 2008). The TSV soccer team has been playing in the Saxony-Anhalt state class (8th league) since 2008.
Club athletes can use the Stadium of Peace with artificial turf and 7,000 standing places, the Sports Hall of Peace, the sports facility for young people and the club's own tennis facility.
