Rita Gerschner in the mid-1960s

Rita Gerschner (born September 9, 1941 in Hilbersdorf ) is a former German badminton player and was the dominant personality among women in GDR badminton in the early 1960s.

Career

In her place of birth, she learned to play badminton at Traktor Hilbersdorf . For this club she also achieved her first national successes. She won all three possible individual titles at the first GDR individual championships in 1961. A year later she even topped this performance by winning the team championship, now playing for activist Tröbitz . With the team she won a total of 10 titles in a row from 1962 to 1971. The brilliant achievement of fighting for all four possible titles in one season was also achieved in the four seasons from 1963 to 1966 . A series of silver medal wins in the individual disciplines followed over the next few years, and then at the end of their careers they were back in top form alongside the newly growing Tröbitz badminton generation around Monika Thiere and Joachim Schimpke at the beginning of the 1970s. In the seasons 1969/1970 and 1970/1971 she won three of four possible titles in a season. In total, she won the GDR title 33 times and won six silver medals without ever winning a bronze medal.

Internationally, Rita Gerschner took part in the GANEFO 1963 in Indonesia. There she was eliminated in the preliminary round in the women's singles against Chen Jiayan . Also in doubles with Megah Inawati was the last stop in the preliminary round.

Rita Gerschner lives in Cottbus today .
