In his birthplace, Harry Deinert learned to play badminton with the local activist Tröbitz association . As a young player he won a title in singles, the FDJ Cup with the team and a silver medal with his long-time partner Hubert Höhne.
In the 1966/1967 season he joined activist Tröbitz's league team as a 20-year-old junior and contributed to winning the GDR championship title in 1967, 1969 and 1971. After that he had a hard time asserting himself against the growing Tröbitzer badminton generation around Roland Riese and Klaus Skobowsky , so that in the 1970s he only played in the GDR league. Until his professional move at the beginning of the new millennium, however, he remained loyal to the Tröbitzer club and the badminton sport .
