Jürgen Bommel (born July 31, 1947 in Tröbitz ; † April 27, 2020 ) was a German badminton player and national player. He was considered one of the greatest talents in East German badminton and was seen as the successor to serial master Gottfried Seemann at an early stage .

Athletic career

Bommel learned to play badminton in the BSG activist Tröbitz . For this club he also fought for all of his sporting successes. In 1960 he was runner-up in the GDR's best determination of the age group 12/13 in the men's singles. A year later he won all three titles in this class. In his first junior year in 1962, he was third in the men's singles. In the following year he beat the entire competition in men's singles, which was up to three years older, and was the first junior champion of the GDR. In mixed he was runner-up at the same event. In 1964 he won the title in all three individual disciplines, a year later he was only defeated in the men's doubles with Klaus-Peter Färber , so that he won two gold and one silver medal. In his last junior year, 1966, he won all three championship trophies again - the mixed title with Ruth Mertzig , the men's doubles title with Roland Riese and the men's singles title.

The highlight of his career was the international call on September 21, 1965 in Tröbitz against the national team from Indonesia . The GDR lost 2: 7, with Bommel also giving up his two games. He lost with Annemarie Seemann in the mixed against Tjia Kian Sien and Tan Tjung Ing with 12:15 and 11:15 and in the men's doubles with Klaus Katzor against Tjia Kian Sien and Tan Bik Gwan with 2:15 and 1:15.

Despite the excellent placements achieved in the junior age and the national team calling, Bommel ended his career in badminton early in favor of a career in football in which he achieved no notable successes.

Jürgen Bommel last lived in Herzberg / Elster .
