Martin Anthony "Marty" Russo (born January 23, 1944 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American politician . Between 1975 and 1993 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Marty Russo attended St. Ignatius School in Chicago until 1961 . After studying law at DePaul University and being admitted to the bar in 1967, he began working in this profession in Chicago. From 1971 to 1973 he was Deputy in Cook County . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the 1974 congressional election , Russo was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Robert P. Hanrahan on January 3, 1975 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete nine legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . Since 1979 he has been a member of the Committee on Ways and Means . He was involved in drafting the tax reform of 1986. Russo was also vice chairman of the subcommittee on health and chairman of the commission on income security. He campaigned for general health insurance.

In 1992 Russo was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he worked as a lobbyist for Cassidy & Associates for 18 years ; until the end of 2010 he acted as its chairman. Today he lives in McLean ( Virginia ).
