The First Battle of Corinth (also known as the Siege of Corinth ) took place from April 29 to May 30, 1862 around the Corinth , Mississippi railroad junction during the American Civil War .

After the victory of the Union troops in the Battle of Shiloh , the armies under Major General Henry Wager Halleck advanced on Corinth. Because of the heavy losses at Shiloh, he marched cautiously towards the city from the north and east. Whenever the armies under his command gained some ground, he let the soldiers dig themselves in. So put z. B. Sherman's Corps set up seven different field fortifications in 14 days, with an eight-mile gain in terrain. All three armies reached a line about 330 m from the Confederate positions on May 28th and dug into it. The siege was to be carried out from these positions.

The commander in chief of the Mississippi Confederate Army, General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard , managed to save his army by a trick. Some of his men were given three daily rations and ordered to prepare for an attack. As expected, some defected to the Union troops with this news. The preparatory shelling began and the Union troops took up their positions. During the night of May 29, the Confederate Army abandoned the city. They used the Mobile-and-Ohio Railroad to carry the sick and wounded, heavy artillery, and tons of supplies. As soon as a train arrived, the troops greeted it with applause, as if reinforcements had arrived. They also set up dummies (Quaker Guns) in the field fortifications. Camp fires were maintained and horn players and drummers played. The rest of the men slipped away unnoticed and evaded to Tupelo , Mississippi. When the Union patrols entered Corinth on the morning of May 30, the Confederates had withdrawn completely.
