Florestan Fernandes

Florestan Fernandes (born July 22, 1920 in São Paulo ; † August 10, 1995 there ) was a Brazilian sociologist and politician ( PT ).

Life

Fernandes came from a poor background; On the advice of friends, he began studying at the University of São Paulo in 1941 , where he received his doctorate ten years later . With his criticism of Gilberto Freyre's race theory, he became one of the most important sociologists in Brazil.

He was a visiting scholar at Columbia University , the University of Toronto and Yale University . From 1986 to 1995 Fernandes was a member of the State of São Paulo in the Chamber of Deputies of the Brazilian Parliament .

The library of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of São Paulo bears his name. In 1964 and 1996 he was awarded the Prêmio Jabuti de Literatura .
