The Pianola Museum in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam is one of around sixty smaller museums in the city. It provides information about the history and playing style of the pianola , which was built from 1895 to around 1935. The museum's collection contains musical instruments from this period.

history

In a former police station built in 1905, the Pianola Museum was opened on the ground floor in 1994 . Fifteen years later, the first floor could also be used. For financial reasons, the former offices of the police station were rented out as living space. The former police cells serve as an archive for piano rolls and documents.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Amsterdam was an important center for trading pianolas. The best-known manufacturers were the companies "Duwaer en Naessens" and "Philipps-Frati". They delivered the so-called " electric pianos " to numerous entertainment venues. In 1908, the Buffalo Convention introduced a standard system for piano rolls. The music repertoire was very extensive, from classical music, ragtime , operetta to marching and dance music. The museum library contains more than 20,000 music rolls and has some special Muziekcilinders (literally "music hat") from a " salon - Organ " from around 1800 with music by Mozart (1756-1791) and Johann Wilhelm Wilms (1772-1847).

There are regular concerts for jazz , saxophone and tango events. The museum has a library and an extensive archive. Of the approximately 50 musical instruments, 15 are regularly exhibited for reasons of space.

Theo de Boer and Kasper Janse established the Stichting Nederlands Piano Museum ("Foundation Dutch Piano Museum") in 1981 . This foundation manages the museum's collection.

The history of the pianola runs parallel to that of the silent film . In 2009 the museum organized an event of the pianolas with experimental films from the 1920s and 1930s.

In early 2013, silent films from the period from 1895 to 1930 were shown accompanied by a pianola, with Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton , among others . For boogie-woogie and blues lovers, the blues band Barrelhouse Blues & Boogie will perform in the museum in 2013 .

For three years the music group Mokum Finef has been organizing traditional klezmer music, a Jewish and Eastern European folk music, in the museum . There were also tango concerts. Twice a month, on Sunday mornings, there is a coffee concert (literally: "coffee concert ") with special pianola music and a free cup of coffee.
