Christine Schweitzer

Christine Schweitzer (* 1959 in Hamburg ) is a German ethnologist (Ph D.), pacifist and peace researcher . In 2009 she completed her PhD on interventions in the former Yugoslavia at Coventry University with Andrew Rigby. In addition to her work as a peace scientist, she is active as a practitioner in the field of civil conflict management and in the peace movement.

Life

Schweitzer studied ethnology and prehistory in Göttingen and Cologne from 1978 to 1987 and graduated in 1987 with a master's degree (MA phil). After completing her studies, she was politically active in the Federation of Nonviolent Action Groups - Graswurzelrevolution (FöGA) and worked in the Graswurzelwerkstatt Cologne until 1992. In 1988 and 1989 she was involved in the founding of the Federation for Social Defense (FSIO). In the 1990s she dealt with the conflicts in the area of ​​the former Yugoslavia as part of various projects, including as co-founder of the international Balkan Peace Team. From 1995 to 1998 she was employed as a scientific advisor under a service contract at the State Chancellery in Düsseldorf in the “Foreign Relations” department and supported the state government, among other things, in developing training to become a peace worker as part of the civil peace service that was being established . Schweitzer was managing director at BSV for the first time (from 1998 to 2000), and since 2001 she has also been employed by the Institute for Peace Work and Nonviolent Conflict Resolution (IFGK). At the same time, she began working (2000 to 2008) as Research Director, then Program Director for the international non-governmental organization (NGO) Nonviolent Peaceforce . From 2010 to 2012 she primarily carried out commissioned studies and also worked twice for Nonviolent Peaceforce as interim program director. Since October 2012 she has been working as a research assistant for the IFGK and as managing director for the BSV. She is also a long-time editor of the network Friedenskooperative issued Peace Forum . Various voluntary activities in the peace movement and peace research also include board positions at War Resisters' International , the journal Science and Peace , and the Working Group for Peace and Conflict Research ; and at the BSV. She is also involved in the civil conflict management platform and the archive active (Hamburg). Since 2014 she has been Chair of the Council of WRI (War Resisters International).
