The Archiv Aktiv e. V. has a collection of sources on the history, theory and practice of organized non-violent groups and the peace movement that is unique in Germany . The focus is on West Germany and the time since 1945, the international movement is u. a. represented by numerous documents from War Resisters' International and the International Union of Reconciliation . The archive is supported by an association; the seat is in Hamburg .

The Aktiv Archive has been collecting magazines, brochures, circulars and correspondence from ecology , peace and human rights movements , especially the various currents that discuss and apply nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience , since 1987 . In 2004 the archive of the International of War Resisters (IDK eV) was added.

The Archiv Aktiv sees itself as a memory of movement and wants to provide constructive impulses for the further development of the nonviolent movement, because so far there is a lack of detailed studies or high-profile presentations of the groups, projects and magazines, of the discussions and activities of the nonviolent movement in Germany. Neither the history of ideas, nor the problems of organization, nor the implementation of theory in practice, nor political influences on larger extra-parliamentary movements were adequately examined.

Legacies and donations from over 50 years of exercise experience result in a stock of approx. 1000 themed folders, approx. 250 magazine titles and numerous brochures, posters, audio and visual materials. Interviews with contemporary witnesses supplement the written documents and allow their statements to be better classified.

Together with contemporary witnesses and those active today, the Active Archive aims to promote a learning process that spans generations of movement in favor of non-violent change and does not limit itself to scientific work. The Archiv Aktiv understands its work as active collecting from participatory observation and combines this with political education work .

The systematic evaluation of the archive material and the information from interviews is intended to make a long-term contribution to preventing forgetting and to the critical historiography of new social movements. The communication and publication of the evaluation results is intended to provide suggestions for current socio-political discussions and for the further development of the theory and practice of nonviolent action.

The Archiv Aktiv wants to encourage initiatives and action groups, such as critical forces in society in general, to work effectively non-violently against injustice and violence and for human, just, peaceful and grassroots conditions.

Students, journalists and other interested parties are, through access to documents that are rarely available in government archives for research support. The Aktiv archive sees itself as an interface between social movement and science. In addition to providing the documents, the archive supports researchers by arranging contemporary witnesses , references and advice.
