82nd United States Congress
The 82nd Congress of the United States , consisting of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative term lasted from January 3, 1951 to January 3, 1953. All members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senators ( Class III ) were elected in November 1950 and September in the state of Maine in the congressional elections. This resulted in a majority in both chambers for the Democratic Party , which with Harry S. Truman also provided the president. The Republican Party only had the role of the opposition party. The Congress met in the American capital Washington, DC The United States at that time consisted of 48 states. The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1940 census .

- January 3, 1951: beginning of the legislative period of the 82nd Congress
- March 29, 1951: Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were found guilty of espionage and sentenced to death on April 5.
- April 11, 1951: President Truman releases General Douglas MacArthur from command in the Far East.
- September 5, 1951: The San Francisco Peace Treaty officially ends the occupation in Japan .
- October 24, 1951: President Harry Truman officially declares the war with Germany over.
- November 10, 1951: In the USA it is possible to make phone calls from coast to coast by direct dialing without an operator.
- December 31, 1951: The Marshall Plan ends.
- March 29, 1952: President Harry S. Truman announces that he will not run for another presidency.
- June 19, 1952: United States Army Special Forces Command (Airborne) is established.
- November 4, 1952: US presidential and congressional elections. Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes new president. Republicans win a majority in both chambers of Congress in the congressional elections.
The legislative term of the 82nd Congress was overshadowed by the events of the Korean War .
