William A. Barrett

William Aloysius Barrett (born August 14, 1896 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  April 12, 1976 there ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1976 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

William Barrett attended Brown Preparatory School and St. Joseph's College in Philadelphia. He also studied law at the South Jersey Law School . However, it is not known whether he ever worked as a lawyer. In the following years he worked in the real estate industry. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party and temporarily sat on its local party executive in Philadelphia.

In the 1944 congressional election , Barrett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican James A. Gallagher on January 3, 1945 . Since he was not confirmed in 1946, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1947 . During this time the Second World War ended . In the elections of 1948 Barrett was re-elected to Congress in the first district of his state, where he replaced Gallagher on January 3, 1949. After 13 re-elections, he could remain in the US House of Representatives until his death on April 12, 1976. During this period, the Cold War , the Korean War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair fell .
