Francis Eugene Walter (born May 26, 1894 in Easton , Pennsylvania , † May 31, 1963 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1963 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Francis Walter attended the public schools in his home country. He later studied at Lehigh University in Bethlehem and at George Washington University and Georgetown University in Washington. Both during the first and during the Second World War he served in the Air Corps US Navy . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1919, he began to work in this profession in Easton. He also became a director of Broad Street Trust Co , Philadelphia, and Easton National Bank . From 1928 to 1933 he was an attorney for Northampton County . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In June 1928 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Houston .
In the 1932 congressional election , Walter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the 21st constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Jacob Banks Kurtz on March 4, 1933 . After 15 re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on May 31, 1963 . Between 1945 and 1953 he represented the 20th and since 1953 the 15th district of his state. From 1933 to 1941, the Roosevelt government passed the New Deal laws . In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd. Since 1941 the work of the congress has been shaped by the events of the Second World War and its consequences. Walter also saw the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War, and the beginning of the civil rights movement as a congressman.
Since 1955, Walter, who is considered to be very conservative, has been chairman of the committee for un-American activities . He was a co-author of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952. Francis Walter was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
