Jacob Banks Kurtz

Jacob Banks Kurtz (born October 31, 1867 in Delaware , Juniata County , Pennsylvania , †  September 18, 1960 in Altoona , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1923 and 1935 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Kurtz attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Dickinson College in Carlisle . After studying law at the local School of Law and being admitted to the bar in 1893, he began to work in this profession in Altoona. Between 1905 and 1912 he served as a district attorney in Blair County there . During the First World War he was head of the security committee and the local defense council. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1922 congressional election , Kurtz was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 21st  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Evan John Jones on March 4, 1923 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1935 . Since 1933 he represented there as the successor to James Mitchell Chase the 23rd district of his state. During his time as a congressman, the Great Depression fell in the early 1930s. The first New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed in 1933 , which Kurtz's party was rather hostile to. In 1933 the 18th amendment from 1919 was revoked by the 21st amendment to the constitution . It was the controversial and unsuccessful prohibition law. In 1935, the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd.

In 1934 Jacob Kurtz was not confirmed in his mandate. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. In 1936, 1940 and 1948 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions . From 1944 to 1946 he was the legal representative of the city of Altoona. He died on September 18, 1960 in Altoona, where he was also buried.
