Leon H. Gavin

Leon Harry Gavin (born February 25, 1893 in Buffalo , New York , †  September 15, 1963 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1963 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1915, Leon Gavin moved to Oil City , Pennsylvania. During World War I he was a sergeant in an infantry unit in the United States Army . He also became a member of the Defense Council in Venango County . He later became executive director of the Oil City Chamber of Commerce. Politically, he joined the Republican Party .

In the 1942 congressional election , Gavin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 20th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Benjamin Jarrett on January 3, 1943 . After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on September 15, 1963 . From 1945 to 1953 he represented the 19th and from 1953 the 23rd district of his state. His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
