Chester H. Gross

Chester Heilman Gross (born October 13, 1888 in York County , Pennsylvania , †  January 9, 1973 in York , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1941 and again from 1943 to 1949 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Chester Gross attended public schools in his home country and a business school in York, and then studied at Pennsylvania State College . In the following years he worked in agriculture. From 1918 to 1922 he was the mayor of East Manchester . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1929 and 1930 . From 1931 to 1940 he headed the school board in East Manchester. Between 1939 and 1940 he was director of the Pennsylvania School Heads Association.

In the 1938 congressional elections , Gross was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Harry L. Haines on January 3, 1939 . Since he was defeated by his predecessor Haines in 1940, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1941 . During this time, the last New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed, which Gross' party was rather opposed to.

After the provisional end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Gross returned to agriculture. In the elections of 1942 he was re-elected to Congress in the 22nd district of his state, where he replaced Haines on January 3, 1943. After two re-elections in the 21st district, he was able to spend three more terms in the US House of Representatives until January 3, 1949. In his second phase as a congressman from 1943, the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War fell . In 1948 he was not re-elected.

In 1954 and 1956, Gross sought unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the congressional elections of those years. Otherwise, he worked in the real estate industry during these years until his retirement on December 31, 1969. He died in York on January 9, 1973.
