William J. Green, Jr.

William Joseph Green Jr. (born March 5, 1910 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  December 21, 1963 ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1947 and again from 1949 to 1963 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Life

William Green attended the public schools in his home country and St. Joseph's Preparatory School and Saint Joseph's College in Philadelphia. From 1937 he worked in the insurance industry in his hometown. During the Second World War he served in the US Army between March and December 1944 . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1944 congressional election , Green was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican C. Frederick Pracht on January 3, 1945 . Since he lost to George W. Sarbacher in 1946 , he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1947 . In the elections of 1948 Green was re-elected to Congress in the fifth district of his state, where he replaced Sarbacher on January 3, 1949. After seven re-elections, he could remain in parliament until his death on December 21, 1963. His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . After a special election, Green's son William (* 1938) took over his mandate.
