Augustine B. Kelley

Augustine Bernard Kelley (born July 9, 1883 in New Baltimore , Somerset County , Pennsylvania , †  November 20, 1957 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1941 and 1957 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Augustine Kelley attended the public schools in his home country and Greensburg High School . In 1908 he graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point . He then studied mining engineering at the International Correspondence School until 1912 . He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and later became head of HC Frick Coke Co. He was also associated with other coke and coal companies. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1935 and 1936 he was a member of the education committee of the city of Greensburg .

In the 1940 congressional election , Kelley was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Robert G. Allen on January 3, 1941 . After eight re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on November 20, 1957 . During this time, the Second World War , the beginning of the Cold War and the civil rights movement, and the Korean War took place . Between 1945 and 1953 Kelley represented the 27th and from 1953 the 21st district of his state. From 1945 to 1947 he headed the Committee on Invalid Pensions . He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
