John Herman Dent

John Herman Dent (born March 10, 1908 in Johnetta , Armstrong County , Pennsylvania , †  April 9, 1988 in Jeannette , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1958 and 1979 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Dent attended the public schools of his home country and then the Great Lakes Naval Aviation Academy in Illinois . He also completed several correspondence courses. He was then a member of the United Rubber Workers union between 1923 and 1937 . There he was chairman of a local section and a member of the entire board. He was also a member of the union's international council. From 1924 to 1928 he served in the Aviation Squadron of the Marine Corps . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1932 to 1934 he sat on Jeannette's municipal council; from 1934 to 1936 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . After that he was a member of the State Senate from 1937 to 1958 ; since 1939 he led the democratic group there. He was also head of the Kelden Coal & Coke Co. and Building & Transportation Co.

After the death of Congressman Augustine B. Kelley , Dent was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the 21st seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on January 27, 1958. After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 1979 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair took place .

In 1978 John Dent renounced another candidacy. He spent his old age in Greensburg and died on April 9, 1988 in Jeannette.
