United Steelworkers

The United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (United Steelworkers or USW) is one of the largest industrial unions in North America with 722,000 active members . She represents workers in the United States and Canada .

Headquarters of the union is Pittsburgh in the US state of Pennsylvania .

On May 22nd, 1942 the "USWA" was founded. Founded by members of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers and the Steel Workers Organizing Committee . Previously there had been frequent, sometimes violent, clashes between striking workers and strike breakers or the police . The union's first president was co-founder Philip Murray.

In June 1944, the 46,000 members of the Aluminum Workers of America agreed to merge with the USWA. Over the years, other unions joined the United Steelworkers: The "International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers" (1967), "United Stone and Allied Product Workers of America" (1971), "Allied and Technical Workers of America" (1972), "Upholsterers International Union of North America" (1985), "United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum & Plastic Workers of America" (1995), "Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers Union" (1996), the Canadian part of "Transportation Communications International Union" (1999), the "American Flint Glass Workers Union" (2003), "Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada" (2004) and most recently the "Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union " (2005).

Since that last merger, the union has had its current name, United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union .

In addition to the associations, the union has entered into numerous strategic partnerships with other unions.
