George M. Rhodes (1965)

George Milton Rhodes (born February 24, 1898 in Reading , Pennsylvania , †  October 23, 1978 there ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1969 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Rhodes attended public schools in his homeland. During the First World War he served in the US Army . From 1913 to 1927 he worked as a printer in the Reading Eagle Co . Then he worked as a businessman. Rhodes was also involved in the labor and trade union movement. From 1927 to 1942 he sat the union representing American Federation of Labor one (AFL) in Reading for the interests of the workers. From 1942 to 1949 he was the manager of The New Era newspaper . Between 1928 and 1951, he also headed the AFL's Federated Trades Council . He was originally a member of the Socialist Party . In 1928 and 1932 he was a delegate at their federal party conventions. He later joined the Democrats and took part in their Democratic National Conventions in 1952 and 1956 .

In the 1948 congressional election , Rhodes was elected to the 13th  constituency of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg on January 3, 1949 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1969 . From 1953 to 1963 he represented the 14th and then the sixth district of his state there. His time in Congress included the Cold War , the Korean War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement .

In 1968 George Rhodes renounced another congressional candidacy. He died on October 23, 1978 in his hometown of Reading.
