Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg
Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg (born September 25, 1887 in Reading , Pennsylvania , † January 19, 1980 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1947 and 1949 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Frederick Muhlenberg came from a well-known family of politicians in Pennsylvania. Some of his ancestors held high state and federal offices in the early years of American history, including Frederick Muhlenberg . He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1908 the Gettysburg College . He then studied until 1912 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia . During the First World War he served as a captain in the US Army between 1917 and 1919 . For his military achievements he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross , the Purple Heart , the Legion of Honor and the Croix de guerre . From 1920 he worked in Reading as an architect. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1934 and 1938 he served on Reading Parish Council; in 1935 and 1936 he was District Chairman of the Republicans in Berks County. Between 1940 and 1946, also during the Second World War , he worked as a lieutenant colonel and later a colonel for the Army Corps of Engineers . For this he was honored with the Legion of Merit .
In the 1946 congressional elections , Muhlenberg was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat Daniel K. Hoch on January 3, 1947 . Since he was not confirmed in 1948, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1949 . This was shaped by the events of the beginning Cold War .
After his time in the US House of Representatives, Muhlenberg worked again as an architect. Between 1952 and 1963 he was chairman of the State Art Commission of Pennsylvania ( State Art Commission ); from 1958 to 1972 he was a member of the district planning commission. He died in Reading on January 19, 1980.
