William S. Moorhead

William Singer Moorhead (born April 8, 1923 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  August 3, 1987 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1981 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Moorhead attended the Shady Side Academy and then until 1941 the Phillips Academy . He then studied at Yale University . From 1943 to 1946 he served in the US Navy in the Pacific Ocean during World War II . After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission to the bar in 1949, he began to work in this profession in Pittsburgh. From 1954 to 1957 he was an Assistant City Solicitor with the city attorneys of the City of Pittsburgh; from 1956 to 1958 he worked for the Housing Authority in Allegheny County .

Politically, Moorhead was a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1958 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 28th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Herman P. Eberharter on January 3, 1959 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . Since 1963 he represented there as the successor of George M. Rhodes the 14th district of his state. During his time as a congressman, the climax and the final phase of the civil rights movement , the Vietnam War and, in 1974, the Watergate affair fell .

In 1980, William Moorehaed renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer in the federal capital Washington. He died in Baltimore on August 3, 1987.
