Herman P. Eberharter

Herman Peter Eberharter (born April 29, 1892 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , †  September 9, 1958 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1958 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Herman Eberharter attended Holy Trinity Parish School , Morehead School, and Fifth Avenue High School . During the First World War he served in an infantry unit in the US Army , in which he rose to lieutenant . After a subsequent law degree at the Law School of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and his admission to the bar in 1925, he began to work in this profession in Pittsburgh. He was also a member of the Army Officers' Reserve Corps . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1935 and 1936 .

In the 1936 congressional election Eberharter was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 32nd  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Theodore L. Moritz on January 3, 1937 . After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on September 9, 1958 . He changed his constituency several times. Between 1943 and 1945 he represented the 31st, from 1945 to 1953 again the 32nd and from 1953 the 28th district of his state. He was a member of the existing between 1938 and 1944 Dies Committee , a predecessor of the later Committee for Un-American Activities . During his time in Congress, the last New Deal laws of the Roosevelt government were passed there until 1941 . Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II . Eberharter's time as a congressman also marked the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the prelude to the civil rights movement . At the time of his death he had already been nominated by his party for the next congressional elections.
