Samuel K. McConnell

Samuel Kerns McConnell (born April 6, 1901 in Eddystone , Delaware County , Pennsylvania , †  April 11, 1985 in Bryn Mawr , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1944 and 1957 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel McConnell attended the public schools in Philadelphia and then studied until 1923 at the University of Pennsylvania there . From 1926 he worked in the banking and investment industry. Between 1939 and 1944 he was a board member and since 1940 chairman of the board of trustees for Norristown State Hospital . From 1940 to 1944 he was also mayor of the Lower Merion parish . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party .

After the death of Congressman J. William Ditter , McConnell was elected in the by-election for the 17th seat of Pennsylvania as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 18, 1944. After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on September 1, 1957 . He repeatedly changed his constituency . Between 1945 and 1953 he represented the 16th and then until 1957 the 13th district of his state. From 1953 to 1955 he was chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor. His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement .

From 1957 to 1961 McConnell was the executive director of United Cerebral Palsy Associations, Inc ; from 1961 to 1967 he was first vice president and then president of Woodcock, Moyer, Fricke and French, Inc. Samuel McConnell spent his old age in Wynnewood and died on April 11, 1985 in Bryn Mawr.
