Richard Murray Simpson (born August 30, 1900 in Huntingdon , Huntingdon County , Pennsylvania , †  January 7, 1960 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1960 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Simpson attended the public schools of his home country and then the University of Pittsburgh until 1923 . He later also studied at Georgetown Law School in Washington, DC It is not known whether he ever practiced as a lawyer. During the First World War he served in a tank unit in the US Army . Simpson worked in the insurance industry between 1923 and 1937. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1935 to 1937 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .

After the death of MP Benjamin K. Focht , Simpson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he took up his new mandate on May 11, 1937, when the by-election for the 18th seat of Pennsylvania was due. After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 7, 1960 . From 1945 to 1953 he represented the 17th and then again the 18th  electoral district of his state. The Roosevelt government's last New Deal laws were passed by 1941 , which Simpson's party was rather hostile to. Since 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II . Richard Simpson also saw the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and domestically the beginning of the civil rights movement as a congressman. He died in Bethesda on January 7, 1960 and was buried in Huntingdon.
