James Edward Murray

James Edward Murray (born May 3, 1876 in St. Thomas , Elgin County , Ontario , † March 23, 1961 in Butte , Montana ) was an American politician of Canadian descent who founded the state of Montana from 1934 to 1961 as a Democrat in the US -Senate represented.

Life

Murray was born on a farm in Ontario. He graduated from St. Jerome's College in Berlin , now Kitchener, in 1897 and moved to the United States in the same year, where he settled in Butte. He was naturalized in 1900 and graduated from New York University Law School , and in 1901 was admitted to the bar, whereupon he began to practice in Butte. There he also worked in the banking industry. From 1906 to 1908 he held the post of district attorney in Silver Bow County .

From 1933 to 1934, Murray served as chairman of the Montana agency dealing with the work of the Public Works Administration . This was a federal government agency created under the New Deal . On November 6, 1934, he was elected to the US Senate to succeed the late Thomas J. Walsh . After numerous re-elections, he finally did not run again in 1960 and thus left the Congress on January 3, 1961 . During his time in Congress, he chaired several committees; among other things, he headed the Committee on Education and Labor . James Murray died in Butte less than three months after the end of his political career.
