John Melcher

John Melcher (born September 6, 1924 in Sioux City , Iowa , † April 12, 2018 in Missoula , Montana ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1969 and of the US Senate from 1977 to 1989 .

Career

Melcher attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Iowa State University as a veterinarian in 1950 . He opened a veterinary clinic in Forsyth , Montana . There he was elected mayor in 1955.

In 1962, Melcher was elected to the Montana Senate. On June 24, 1969, he was elected as a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives . In the 1976 election, he ran for the seat of the no longer running Mike Mansfield as a member of the US Senate for the state of Montana. In the 1982 election he defended his mandate, but was defeated in the 1988 election , which took place at the same time as the presidential election, which was successful for the Republicans , the Republican Conrad Burns . This replaced Melcher on January 3, 1989 as senator. Melcher withdrew from politics.
