John Patrick Williams

Pat Williams (born October 30, 1937 in Helena , Montana ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 1997 he represented the state of Montana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Pat Williams attended public schools in his home country. He then continued his education between 1956 and 1957 at the University of Montana and later at the University of Denver in Colorado . From 1961 to 1969 he was a member of the National Guard . He later worked as a teacher.

Williams became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1967 and 1969 he was a member of the Montana House of Representatives . Between 1969 and 1971 he was assistant to Congressman and US Senator John Melcher . From 1972 to 1978 he was a member of an advisory committee to the governor of Montana. In the 1978 congressional elections, Williams was elected to the US House of Representatives as the successor to Max Baucus , who had moved to the Senate . Four years earlier he had lost to Baucus at the Democratic Primary . After some re-elections, in which he usually came to a share of the vote of 60 percent, Williams was able to exercise this mandate between January 3, 1979 and January 3, 1997, before he did not run for re-election. He advocated environmental protection, higher corporate taxation and a cut in the defense budget. Today he teaches at the University of Montana.
