Samuel McLean

Samuel McLean (born August 7, 1826 in Summit Hill , Carbon County , Pennsylvania , † July 16, 1877 in Burkeville , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1864 and 1867 he represented the Montana Territory in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Samuel McLean attended public schools in Wyoming Valley , Pennsylvania and Lafayette College in Easton , also in Pennsylvania. After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1849. He then began to practice his new profession in his home state. From 1855 to 1860 he was a district attorney in Carbon County. He then moved west, where he became Attorney General in what was then the Jefferson Territory , now the state of Colorado , in 1860 .

Political career

McLean became a member of the Democratic Party . After the establishment of the Montana Territory, he was the first delegate from that area to the US House of Representatives. There he represented his territory between January 6, 1865 and March 3, 1867 . Due to the fact that Montana was not yet a state in the United States , Samuel McLean did not have the right to vote in Congress . In 1866 he decided not to run again.

Another résumé

Samuel McLean later became president of his McLean Silver Mining Company . He then moved to Virginia, where he ran a plantation near Burkesville. He died there in 1877.
