Richard Gardner Shoup (born November 29, 1923 in Salmon , Lemhi County , Idaho , † November 25, 1995 ) was an American politician .

Life

Richard Shoup was the great grandson of George Laird Shoup , a US Senator from Idaho. He studied at the University of Montana in Missoula and received his Bachelor of Science there in 1950 . During the Second World War, he served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 . During the Korean War he was again a soldier from 1951 to 1952.

Shoup's political career began with his election to the Missoula City Council . He was a member of it from 1963 to 1967 and was its president from 1965 to 1967. From 1967 to 1970 Shoup held the office of mayor of the city. During his time as mayor, he also represented the city in the Montana League of Cities and Towns . Shoup was elected as a Republican to Congress in 1970 and represented the state of Montana in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1971 to January 3, 1975 . After retiring from politics, he was director of the Union Pacific Railroad in Washington, DC from 1975 to 1984
