James Franklin Battin
James Franklin Battin (born February 13, 1925 in Wichita , Kansas , † September 27, 1996 in Billings , Montana ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1961 and 1969 he represented the state of Montana in the US House of Representatives ; he then became a federal judge at the federal district court for the district of Montana.
Early years
In November 1929, James Battin came to Montana with his parents. In Billings he attended public schools. He graduated from high school in 1942. During World War II he served as a member of the US Navy in the Pacific. After the war he continued his education at Eastern Montana College in Billings until 1948 . He then studied law until 1951 at the Law School of George Washington University . After his admission to the bar, he began his profession in Washington, DC . In 1952 he returned to Billings.
Political career
In Billings, he served as an assistant district attorney, advisor to the planning commission and legal representative of the city. Battin became a member of the Republican Party . From 1958 to 1959 he was a member of the House of Representatives in Montana . In the 1960 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives to succeed LeRoy H. Anderson . Since he was confirmed in the following congressional elections, he could remain in Congress between January 3, 1961 and February 27, 1969 . He stepped down that day after President Richard Nixon's appointment to the United States District Court for the District of Montana to succeed William James Jameson . From 1979 to 1990 he was Chief Judge Chairman of this federal court . On February 13, 1990, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired. His seat fell to Jack D. Shanstrom ; the presidency of the court was taken over by Paul G. Hatfield . James Battin died in Billings in 1996.
