William H. Clagett

William Horace Clagett (born September 21, 1838 in Upper Marlboro , Prince George's County , Maryland , † August 3, 1901 in Spokane , Washington ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the Montana Territory in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

In 1850, William Clagett moved to Keokuk , Iowa with his father . There he finished elementary school. He then studied law until 1858. After his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession in Keokuk. In 1861 he moved to the Nevada Territory , where he worked as a lawyer first in Carson City and then in Humboldt .

Political career

William Clagett became a member of the Republican Party . From 1862 to 1863 he was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives of Nevada; after the area acceded to the United States as a state , he became a member of the Nevada Assembly . He held this mandate from 1864 to 1865. In the following years he practiced as a lawyer in the cities of Virginia City , Helena and Deer Lodge . The latter two were in what was then Montana territory. Between March 4, 1871 and March 3, 1873 he was a member of the US House of Representatives as a delegate of this territory. Since this area was not an official state of the USA, he had no voting rights in Congress . In the elections of 1872 he was defeated by Martin Maginnis , the candidate of the Democratic Party .

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure in the federal capital Washington, DC William Clagett worked again as a lawyer in various cities in the northwestern United States. In 1889 he was chairman of the Idaho Constituent Assembly . For this state he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US Senate in 1891 and 1895 . He then moved to Spokane, Washington state. There he also worked as a lawyer again. William Clagett was the uncle of Samuel B. Pettengill , who represented Indiana in the US House of Representatives between 1931 and 1939 .
