Conrad Burns
Conrad Ray Burns (born January 25, 1935 in Gallatin , Daviess County , Missouri , † April 28, 2016 in Billings , Montana ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ). From 1989 to 2007 he represented the state of Montana in the US Senate .
After attending the public schools in his hometown of Gallatin, Conrad Burns studied from 1953 to 1954 at the University of Missouri at Columbia . Between 1955 and 1957 he served in the United States Marine Corps . He then worked as an agricultural correspondent for a local television station in Montana; he also worked as an auctioneer at cattle auctions in Billings .
It wasn't until 1986 that Burns got into politics when he became a member of the Yellowstone County governing body ( County Commission ) . Two years later, the Republicans put him up as a candidate for the Democratic US Senator John Melcher . Burns prevailed, aided by the simultaneous success of George Bush in the presidential election , with 51:48 percent of the vote against Melcher and replaced him on January 3, 1989 in Congress . There he sat, among other things, on the grant committee . In this role he was able to send large sums of money to his home state.
After a safe first re-election, Burns struggled significantly more in 2000. He met the politically inexperienced rancher Brian Schweitzer , who led a tactically clever election campaign and ultimately only just lost 47:51 percent of the vote. The presidential election , which took place at the same time, gave George W. Bush a much greater lead over the Democrat Al Gore in Montana . Schweitzer became governor of Montana four years later .
After Burns' approval ratings fell significantly again over the next six years, the Democrats went to great lengths to replace him in the 2006 Senate election . Jon Tester , former President of the State Senate , succeeded in doing this with just under 49:48 percent of the vote.
Burns was a lobbyist after leaving the Senate and lived in Arlington .
