Walter Karwath

Walter Karwath (born November 11, 1919 in Vienna ; † March 16, 1986 ) was President of the Austrian Buddhist Religious Society.

Life

He attended elementary school in Vienna, then for two years the Kalksburg College and then the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna , where he graduated in 1937. He then studied medicine and received his doctorate on December 17, 1942. He spent the war in the medical corps . In 1945 a general medical practice was opened in Vienna.

In 1952 he accepted an offer from the Indonesian health service and worked as a district doctor in Borneo and Java until 1955 . When he returned to Vienna in 1956, he reopened a medical practice in which he mainly dealt with acupuncture , neural therapy and psychological therapy.

From his youth equally interested in science as in philosophy and in the totality of life, he was at work in Indonesia to Buddhism , the usable also in his profession practical ways of life coaching and knowledge offered. Since then, Walter Karwath has endeavored to disseminate information about Buddhism and explanations of its teachings in the West and to demonstrate the advantages of the Buddhist worldview for everyday western life. He explained Buddhism as a doctrine that would not be alien to occidental people, but would even be more appropriate to their nature, since it corresponds to the thirst for knowledge and does not contradict scientific thinking. As an alternative to religious beliefs, Buddhism represents an enrichment of Western culture and could be of great importance for a new society to come.

He has been a member of the PEN Club since January 1975 , since 1976 chairman of the Friends of the Buddhist Culture and Meditation Center Scheibbs , since 1977 President of the Austrian Buddhist Union and since the state recognition of Buddhism in Austria on February 11, 1983, President of Austrian Buddhist Religious Society .
