The 1976 election to the United States Senate for the 95th United States Congress took place on November 2nd. It was part of the election in the United States that day and coincided with the presidential election in which Jimmy Carter was elected to succeed President Gerald Ford .

The 33 Class I seats were available for election, there were no by-elections for senators who left office prematurely. 21 of these senators belonged to the Democratic Party , 10 to the Republicans , one of the Conservative Party of New York State , and one was independent. 16 incumbent were re 12 Democratic 3 Republican and Independent Harry F. Byrd junior . Overall, the Democrats were able to defend their majority of 61 seats, the Republicans were able to win one seat. The previous Conservative Senator James L. Buckley lost his seat despite support from the Republicans.
