Election to the United States Senate in 1966

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1966 election to the United States Senate for the 90th United States Congress took place on November 8th. She was part of the elections in the United States on that day and it was half-time choice (Engl. Midterm election ) in the middle of the second (and first full) term of President Lyndon B. Johnson .

With the controversy over the Vietnam War and the advantage of the mid-term election, Republicans won three seats from the Democrats. They lost their two-thirds majority in the Senate, which had only been won in 1964, but were still significantly stronger than the Republicans with 64 to 36 seats.

The 33 Class II seats were up for election, and there were two by-elections for senators who left office prematurely. Twenty of these senators were from the Democratic Party and 15 from the Republicans . 28 incumbents were able to defend their seat, 15 Democrats and 13 Republicans. 3 previously Democratic seats went to the Republicans, the Democrats could not win a seat from the Republicans.
