Process of the primaries
The party primaries to determine the respective candidates took place between March and September 2016 according to different procedures, depending on the state. The different dates and elective modules are justified by different electoral rights of the states. Louisiana does not hold a primary election in this sense, as multiple candidates from one party can be on the ballot in the main election. In the main election on November 8, 2016, with the exception of Louisiana and Georgia, the candidate with the most votes won the election; in Louisiana and Georgia there could be runoff elections if no candidate reaches more than 50 percent of the votes in the main election.
