The 1972 election to the United States Senate for the 93rd United States Congress took place on November 7th. It was part of the election in the United States that day and coincided with the presidential election , which President Richard Nixon won with a landslide victory. It was the first election to the Senate after the 26th Amendment was passed , which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 years.
There were 33 Class II seats , one of which was a by-election for a deceased senator, and there was also a by-election in Vermont. 14 of the senators standing for election belonged to the Democratic Party and 19 to the Republicans . The Democrats won 6 seats from the Republicans, the Republicans 4 from the Democrats. As a result, the Democrats were able to increase their majority in the Senate from 54 to 56 seats, the Republicans fell from 44 to 42. In addition, one Senator was Conservative and one Independent, neither of whom stood for election.
