23rd United States Congress
The 23rd Congress of the United States , made up of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1833 to March 4, 1835. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class I ) were elected in the 1832 congressional elections. There were different majorities in the two chambers. In the Senate, the National Republican Party , whose supporters are sometimes referred to as anti-Jacksonians, had a majority. In the House of Representatives, the Democratic Party , whose supporters were then also known as the Jacksonians, had the most MPs. The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 24 states. Andrew Jackson was the president . The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1830 census .
Important events
- March 4, 1833: beginning of the legislative period of the 23rd Congress. At the same time, President Jackson is inducted into his second term. Martin Van Buren becomes Vice President.
- During the legislative period, the nullification crisis with the state of South Carolina continues. After the compromise on this issue in March 1833, tensions gradually subsided. Otherwise the Indian Wars will continue.
- June 6, 1833: President Jackson becomes the first US President to take the railroad.
- August 12, 1833: Chicago is founded .
- March 28, 1834: The US Senate reprimands President Jackson for his policy of breaking up the Second Bank of the United States .
- April 14, 1834: Whig Party officially founded . One of the co-founders is Senator Henry Clay .
- January 30, 1835: Richard Lawrence assassins President Jackson and fails. It is the first assassination attempt on an American president.
