Life

After graduating from Yale University in 1813, studied Kane the law and was in Nashville ( Tennessee as) lawyer admitted. In 1814 he moved to Kaskaskia ( Illinois ), where he shortly afterwards a judge of the Illinois Territory was appointed. Kane's political career reached its first climax in 1818, when he was instrumental in founding the state of Illinois at the constitutional convention of that year, and Kane, then only 24, became one of the Illinois founding fathers.

Kanes suffered his only election defeat in 1820 when he ran unsuccessfully for the Democrats for a seat in the United States House of Representatives . For this he was appointed the first Secretary of State of Illinois in the same year and served from 1820 to 1824. Then Kane was elected to the House of Representatives of Illinois , but remained in this position only a few months. The reason was his appointment as a US Senator for his state of Illinois. Kane was re-elected in 1831 and served from March 4, 1825 until his death at the age of only 41.

His daughter Elizabeth Kane was married to William Henry Bissell , who was initially a congressman and governor of Illinois from 1857 to 1860 .

The Kane County now bears his name.
