Sherman Page

Sherman Page (born May 9, 1779 in Cheshire , Connecticut , † September 27, 1853 in Unadilla , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1833 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sherman Page was born in Cheshire during the War of Independence . He attended community schools. In 1799 he taught at a school in Coventry . He studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1805 and then began practicing in Unadilla, Otsego County . In 1827 he was a member of the New York State Assembly . He was a judge on the Court of Common Pleas in Otsego County. Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the 1832 congressional elections for the 23rd Congress , Page was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded William Hogan on March 4, 1833 . He was re-elected once and then dropped out after the March 3, 1837 Congress of. As a congressman, he chaired the Committee on Public Expenditures ( 24th Congress ).

He died in Unadilla on September 27, 1853. He was buried in St. Matthew's Cemetery .
