John Swinburne

John Swinburne (born March 30, 1820 in Lewis County , New York , †  March 28, 1889 in Albany , New York) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1887 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Swinburne attended public schools in his home country. In 1847 he graduated from Albany Medical College . After that he started practicing as a doctor. During the Civil War he served as a doctor in the Union Army . Between 1864 and 1870 he was the head of the health officer in the New York harbor . During the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871, Swinburne was head of the American Ambulance Corps during the siege of Pariswho took care of the injured French soldiers. After returning to the United States, he worked as a doctor in Albany. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . After a long controversial election, Swinburne was elected Mayor of Albany in 1883. Because of the controversial election result, he was only able to take up office in 1884 and only last ten months. Then his term of office ended.

In the congressional elections of 1884 Swinburne was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Abraham X Parker on March 4, 1885 . Until March 3, 1887 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . In 1886 he was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Swinburne worked again as a medical professional. He died of stomach cancer on March 28, 1889 in Albany.
