John Holmes Prentiss

John Holmes Prentiss (born April 17, 1784 in Worcester , Massachusetts , † June 26, 1861 in Cooperstown , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1837 and 1841 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . The US Senator Samuel Prentiss was his brother.

Career

John Holmes Prentiss was born in Worcester about a year after the War of Independence ended . He attended local and private schools. In 1808 he was a foreman at the New York Evening Post . He moved to Cooperstown, Otsego County , in October 1808 . There he founded Freeman's Journal in the same year , where he worked as an editor. Governor George Clinton made him Colonel in the Militia and then served as a Division Inspector on the Staff of the Heerführerö ( Commander in Chief ). On April 24, 1833 he became postmaster in Cooperstown - a position he held until February 17, 1837. Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . He was vice president of the Democratic State Convention in Albany .

In the congressional election of 1836 for the 25th Congress , Prentiss was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Sherman Page on March 4, 1837 . He was re-elected once. Since he on a run again in 1840 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1841 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he returned to his previous newspaper activity. He also served as President of the Bank of Cooperstown . He died on June 26, 1861 in Cooperstown and was then buried in Lakewood Cemetery . At that point the civil war had been raging for about two and a half months.
