George Fisher (politician)

George Fisher (born March 17, 1788 in Franklin , Massachusetts , † March 26, 1861 in New York City ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1829 and 1830 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Fisher was born in Norfolk County about five years after the American Revolutionary War ended . He attended community schools and the Brown University in Providence ( Rhode Iceland ). Fisher studied law . After receiving his license to practice law in Oswego County in 1816, he began practicing in Oswego . In 1818 he was appointed school inspector. He was the trustee of the Village of Oswego in 1828 and 1833 .

As a result of a fragmentation of the Democratic Republican Party before and during the presidency of John Quincy Adams (1825-1829), he joined the anti-Jacksonian faction . In the congressional elections of 1828 Fisher was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Silas Wright and Rudolph Bunner on March 4, 1829 . His choice was successfully challenged by Silas Wright, who then renounced the seat. Fisher retired from the after February 5, 1830 Congress of.

As a trustee he worked in schools in 1830. In addition, he continued his work as a lawyer in Oswego until 1833. Then he went to France with his family , where he spent five years raising his children. The family then returned to Oswego, where he did real estate business. He was president of Northwestern Insurance Co. for several years . In 1856 he moved to New York City, where he died about two weeks before the outbreak of the Civil War .
