William Fitts Ryan

William Fitts Ryan (born June 28, 1922 in Albion , New York , † September 17, 1972 in New York City ) was an American officer, lawyer and politician . Between 1961 and 1972 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Fitts Ryan was born in Orleans County about four years after the end of World War I. He attended the schools of Albion. He graduated from Princeton University in 1947 and Columbia Law School in 1949 . After receiving his bar license in 1949, he began practicing in New York City. Between 1950 and 1957 and between 1957 and 1961 he served as the assistant district attorney in Manhattan .

After the outbreak of World War II , he enlisted in the US Army . He held the rank of First Lieutenant and served between 1943 and 1946 as an artillery officer in the 32nd  Infantry Division in the South Pacific.

Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In 1968 he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago ( Illinois part). In the 1960 congressional elections for the 87th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Ludwig Teller on January 4, 1961 . He was re-elected five times in a row. He died on September 17, 1972 in New York City. His body was on the St. Thomas Church Cemetery in Croom ( Maryland buried).
