Charles E. Clarke

Charles Ezra Clarke (born April 8, 1790 in Saybrook , Connecticut , † December 29, 1863 in Great Bend , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1849 and 1851 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Ezra Clarke was born in Saybrook about seven years after the War of Independence ended . He completed his undergraduate studies and then graduated from Yale College in 1809 . Then he studied law . He was admitted to the bar in 1815 and then began practicing in Watertown . He moved to Great Bend, Jefferson County , in 1840 . He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1839 and 1840 . Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party .

In the 1848 congressional election for the 31st Congress , Clarke was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th electoral district of New York , where he succeeded Joseph Mullin on March 4, 1849 . He retired from the after March 3, 1851 Congress of.

After his time at Congress he went back to his practice as a lawyer. He also built and operated a flour mill. He was also active in agriculture. He died in Great Bend on December 29, 1863. His body was then interred in Brookside Cemetery in Watertown. At that time the civil war was raging .
