Georg Gottlob Friedrich Heinrich Rheinwald (born May 20, 1802 in Scharnhausen , Württemberg , † March 31, 1849 near Berlin ) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian .

Life

Georg Friedrich Heinrich Rheinwald was the son of the PhD preacher Carl Friedrich Rheinwald in Scharnhausen and Ernestine Charlotte, nee. Goz. His parents married on November 18, 1800 in Stuttgart. His younger brother Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Rheinwald was born on May 6, 1805. The father undertook the first school education for the brothers. From 1814 he attended high school in Stuttgart . From 1820 to 1823 he studied Protestant theology and philosophy at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. There he heard lectures from Johann Friedrich Flatt , Ernst Gottlieb Bengel and Johann Christian Friedrich Steudel , but also from the Catholic professors Johann Sebastian von Drey , Johann Baptist von Hirscher and Pfeilmoser . He lived there in the Evangelical Abbey . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. One of his comrades there was the later poet Eduard Mörike .

In 1824 and 1825 he was in Berlin as “Dr. of philosophy ”. In 1823 the student was at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. He completed his habilitation in 1826 and became a private lecturer in Protestant theology for “Church history and the New Testament” in Berlin. From Easter 1827 he held lectures a. a. "Acts of the Apostles", "Missionary History of the Evangelical Church" and "Examination on Church History". In 1830 he was appointed associate professor in Berlin. On March 28, 1833 he officially resigned from office in Berlin, but by the end of January 1833 he was in Bonn. On July 13, 1833 he was appointed full professor of Protestant theology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and gave lectures there. On May 3, 1834, he was promoted to full professor with the support of the curator of the University of Philipp Joseph von Rehfues .

Rheinwald had a relationship with an unhappy married woman of a Catholic medicine professor in Bonn, whom he allegedly persuaded to divorce her husband. In the fall of 1834 he left Bonn because of this affair. The Protestant theological faculty in Bonn demanded that he no longer be allowed to give lectures. After a lengthy investigation, Ernst von Bodelschwingh the Elder decided with a decree of June 5, 1836 that Rheinwald was not allowed to hold lectures, Rheinwald was suspended and finally Rheinwald was relieved of his position on June 7, 1843 by a "cabinet order".

Between 1834 and 1836 he traveled to southern Germany, France and Belgium and stayed in Munich for a long time . Here he found a manuscript by Petrus Abelardus , which he edited for the first time. With a letter dated March 21, 1838 to Ferdinand Hand , Rheinwald supported Emanuel Geibel with his doctoral requests at the University of Jena .

On April 1, 1838, Rheinwald was given the task of editing the Allgemeine Preußische Staats-Zeitung after Leopold Ranke had previously refused this task. On June 8, 1838, he was released from this position. His successor in the role of editor of the newspaper was the philosopher August Arnold . But Rheinwald continued to work for the Ministry of Spiritual and Educational Affairs .

Rheinwald worked on the 9th edition of the General German Real Encyclopedia for the educated classes of Brockhaus. In 1846 he fell ill with a nervous disorder and had to stop his editorial work. At times he was housed as an inpatient. His last official address was: “Rheinwald, GFH Dr. d. Theology and Philosophy, ordinary Prof. d. Theologie, Potsdamer Str. 116 “He died on March 31, 1849 near Berlin.
