Gerhard Friedrich Abraham Strauss (born  September 24, 1786 in Iserlohn ; †  July 19, 1863 in Berlin ) was a Prussian court preacher and professor of practical theology.

Life

Friedrich Strauss was born the son of a pastor in Iserlohn , Westphalia . From 1805 to 1808 he studied Protestant theology at Friedrichs-Universität Halle and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In Halle he became a member of Guestphalia II in 1806 . During his studies he met August Neander , who later became professor of theology , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. Together with Otto von Loeben ("Isidorus Orientalis"), Joseph von Eichendorff ("Florens") and Wilhelm Budde (1786–1860, pseudonym "Astralis") they formed the "Eleusian League". From 1809 to 1814 he was pastor of the Lutheran congregation in Ronsdorf , then in Elberfeld . It was here that his successful four-volume work Glockentöne was written . In 1816 Strauss married Johanna von der Heydt, daughter of the influential banker and former Elberfeld mayor Daniel Heinrich von der Heydt-Kersten and sister of the banker and later Prussian Minister of Commerce and Finance , August Frh. Von der Heydt . In 1822 he became fourth cathedral and court preacher at the Prussian court in Berlin and professor for practical theology at Berlin University . In 1824 he was one of the founders of the Berlin Mission Society . In 1833/34 he was the rector of the university, and in 1836 he became a clergyman in the Ministry of Culture . When Friedrich Wilhelm IV. , Who, in contrast to his father, was very pious, ascended the Prussian throne in 1840 , Strauss gained considerable influence over the king. During the March Revolution of 1848, he is said to have persuaded him to give in. In 1850 he became a member of the Old Prussian Evangelical High Church Council and in 1856 a court preacher.
