August Arnold (born June 13, 1789 in Jena , † December 5, 1860 in Merseburg ) was a German history philosopher and political scientist.

Life

After attending grammar school in Gotha and studying in Heidelberg and Göttingen , August Arnold became a teacher in Eisenach in 1811 and married there in the same year. In 1813 he became a librarian in Gotha, in 1817 a senior teacher in Bromberg and in 1829 director of the high school in Königsberg in the Neumark . He turned down a call as professor of history and political science at the University of Kharkov in 1832, primarily out of consideration for the career of his only son.

In June 1835 Arnold took over the management of the editorial team of the “ Allgemeine Preußische Staatszeitung ” in addition to the school management , but did not become the responsible editor until 1839. As early as 1840 he gave up this activity again because of the uncertain circumstances of the newspaper.

After the death of his wife in 1848 he resigned from school and devoted himself to his studies in Berlin , Erfurt , Neisse , Halle (Saale) , Danzig and Merseburg.
